Research suggests nearly 1 in 20 people may be affected by fibromyalgia. As someone living with this pre-existing health condition, you may find it harder than most to find cheap travel insurance. Specialist insurers, like AllClear, can work with you to provide the protection you need.

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia, also known as fibromyalgia syndrome or FMS, is a chronic musculoskeletal condition whose symptoms include extensive muscle pain, fatigue, disturbed sleep, extreme sensitivity, dizziness, memory and concentration difficulties. It may also be associated with irritable bowel syndrome. Because its symptoms are not overtly displayed it is sometimes called an invisible disability. Those symptoms also vary and so with them treatments which may include psychological, rheumatalogical or neurological therapies.

Do I need to declare fibromyalgia as a pre-existing medical condition when buying travel insurance?

Yes. You must always declare honestly and in full any pre existing health conditions you have. Don’t be tempted to be economical with the truth in the hope of getting a cheap travel insurance quote. It would be a false economy as it could mean your insurance is invalid and should you need emergency medical treatment and/or need medical repatriation to the UK, you, not your insurer, will be liable for the costs.

Will having fibromyalgia prevent me from getting travel insurance?

Having fibromyalgia won’t stop you getting travel insurance. As discussed above it is important though that you declare you have fibromyalgia and you might find your insurer asks for a higher premium and they may choose to restrict your cover. Because AllClear is a specialist firm we are experienced in sourcing effective and good value travel insurance for people with health conditions, including fibromyalgia.

And we don’t stop there…

We’ve answered some of the questions you may have about Travel Insurance

  • QCan I travel by air with fibromyalgia?
AYes, many people with fibromyalgia are perfectly okay to travel by air. We’d recommend, before booking your trip, consulting with your GP to check that you’re fit to fly. If you need to bring extra luggage, most airports have special services that will help you to transport your luggage around the airport, but make sure to let them know you’re coming in advance. It’s important if you need to take oxygen with you when you travel or other equipment that will need to be with you in the aircraft, rather than the hold, that you let the airline know in advance.
  • QCan I get travel insurance once diagnosed with fibromyalgia?
AYes, fibromyalgia should not stop you being able to get travel insurance. The quote you will receive depends on any medication you’re taking or other conditions you may have.
  • QDo I need to declare fibromyalgia as a pre-existing medical condition?
AYes. It’s always best to declare any conditions you’ve been diagnosed with when applying for travel insurance, including fibromyalgia. This ensures any medication you may be taking will be covered, as well as any treatment for your fibromyalgia you need to seek while you’re away.
  • QWill having fibromyalgia prevent me from getting travel insurance?
AHaving fibromyalgia shouldn’t stop you from getting travel insurance. The quote you will receive depends on the severity of your fibromyalgia, any medication you’re taking, and other conditions you may have.
  • QWill fibromyalgia make my travel insurance premium increase?
AThe cost of travel insurance takes into account any pre-existing conditions you may have, along with how severe they are and any treatment you may be receiving. If you have fibromyalgia, your travel insurance will probably cost more than someone of the same age with no pre-existing conditions, but it doesn’t mean the cost will be huge. It’s always worth contacting a specialist insurer such as AllClear that can help you to get the right cover at the right price.
