If you have cystic fibrosis you might be finding it difficult to find travel insurance for what is the UK’s most commonly inherited disorder. It is possible however, as specialists in travel insurance for people pre-existing medical conditions like AllClear will work hard to accommodate you.

What is cystic fibrosis disease?

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder which impacts the lungs and digestive system through abnormal production of sodium and chloride in the body’s cells. Affecting around 9,000 people its symptoms include persistent coughing and susceptibility to infections of the chest and lungs. There is no cure for CF so treatments are designed to minimise its impact. These can range from physiotherapy and dietary change through antibiotic and bronchodilatory medications and, in rare case, lung transplants.

Do I need to declare cystic fibrosis disease as a pre-existing medical condition when buying travel insurance?

Yes. As cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease you are born with it meaning you are classed for life as having a pre existing health condition. If you do not declare it when getting a travel insurance quote then should you later try to claim on your policy this might be refused by your insurer. Should you then fall ill you could find yourself liable for the emergency medical treatment costs and associated bills.

Will having cystic fibrosis disease prevent me from getting travel insurance?

Having cystic fibrosis shouldn’t stop you getting cover, it is a chronic condition which brings with it protection under disability discrimination laws. Whilst it is illegal for insurers to refuse insurance to people with cystic fibrosis they can choose to impose particular limits and exclusions or charge a higher premium than they would someone who does not have a pre-existing medical condition.  However AllClear, as an insurance company specialising in serving people with disabilities and chronic health issues, can arrange effective and highly competitive travel cover.

The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the leading charity in the UK supporting people whose lives are affected by CF. It provides wide-ranging advice and information on the condition as well as offering practical support through welfare grants and a helpline (open 9am – 5pm weekdays on 020 3795 2184). The NHS also offers an overview of the symptoms, causes, diagnosis and treatment of cystic fibrosis.
