Keeping Your WAV Winter Ready: Essential Tips for Cold Weather Driving

As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, keeping your Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) in top condition becomes even more important. Winter weather can make driving challenging so a little extra preparation can make a huge difference in comfort, safety, and peace of mind.

At Fish Insurance, we understand that your WAV is more than just a vehicle – it’s your independence. That’s why we’ve put together some practical advice to help you look after your vehicle during the colder months, so you can travel with confidence whatever the weather brings.

1. Check Your Tyres and Brakes

Cold weather can affect tyre pressure and grip, so make sure your tyres are properly inflated and have at least 3mm of tread depth. If you live in an area prone to snow or ice, consider switching to winter tyres for better traction.

It’s also worth having your brakes checked before the temperatures drop too far as road salt, moisture and cold conditions can all affect braking performance.

2. Keep Your Battery Healthy

Car batteries are one of the most common causes of winter breakdowns. If your WAV’s battery is over three years old, it might be worth getting it tested before the cold sets in. Try to start your engine regularly, even if you’re not using the vehicle every day, and keep journeys long enough to recharge the battery.

3. Look After Ramps, Lifts, and Doors

Accessibility equipment is at the heart of your WAV and it can be particularly vulnerable to cold, damp conditions.

  • Lubricate moving parts with a silicone-based spray to prevent freezing or sticking.
  • Check seals and rubber trims on doors and ramps for wear or cracks.
  • Keep entry points clear of ice and snow — a quick brush-off before you travel can prevent damage or malfunction.

It’s a good idea to give ramps and lifts a quick test before setting off, especially after a frost or heavy rain.

4. Prepare an Emergency Kit

Even with careful maintenance, winter roads can be unpredictable. Keep a few essentials in your WAV, including:

  • A blanket or warm clothing
  • A torch and spare batteries
  • A fully charged mobile phone and charger
  • De-icer, scraper, and spare washer fluid
  • Any personal or medical supplies you might need if you get delayed

A small winter kit can turn an unexpected wait into a much safer and more manageable experience.

5. Keep Your Visibility Clear

Dirty windscreens and headlights can drastically reduce visibility in gloomy winter conditions. Top up washer fluid with a winter-grade solution, make sure your wipers are in good condition and give your headlights and indicators a regular wipe.

6. Review Your Insurance Cover

Winter can also be a good time to make sure your insurance policy meets your requirements. A standard motor policy might not provide the right level of protection for a specially converted WAV.

At Fish Insurance, we’ve been supporting those with disabilities, pre-existing medical conditions, and mobility challenges for 50 years. Our specialist WAV insurance policy is designed specifically for adapted vehicles, covering not only the vehicle itself but also ramps, lifts, and other bespoke equipment.

So, if the unexpected happens this winter, whether it’s a breakdown, an accident, or damage to your equipment, you’ll have the reassurance that your independence is properly protected.

Stay Safe, Stay Mobile

With a little preparation, you can keep your WAV running smoothly all winter long. Regular checks, a few extra precautions, and the right insurance cover will help ensure you’re ready for whatever the weather has in store.
