15 discounts & freebies for over 60s in the UK
Turning 60 comes with plenty of perks, from cheaper travel and cinema tickets to special shopping rewards and discounted days out.
There are lots of discounts, concessions and freebies available to over-60s across the UK – but many aren’t widely advertised. We’ve rounded up some of the best-known offers and schemes worth knowing about, so you can make the most of your age-related benefits.
Offers and eligibility can change, so always check the provider’s latest terms before you travel or make a purchase.
1. Get 10% off at Iceland every Tuesday
If you’re aged 60 or over, you can get 10% off your shopping at Iceland and The Food Warehouse every Tuesday.
There’s no minimum spend, and the discount applies across the store, making it one of the simplest over 60s discounts to use.
Iceland also offers a free Benefits Boost service for customers aged 66 and over. It provides access to support from experts who can help identify benefits you may be entitled to and assist with applications.
2. Earn extra Boots Advantage Card points
Boots has an Over 60s Rewards scheme for Advantage Card members aged 60 and over.
Members can collect 8 points for every £1 spent on Boots brands and selected exclusive brands, as well as receiving access to special offers and events.
There’s also a separate 10% discount at Boots Opticians for customers aged 60 or over when buying a complete first pair of glasses or prescription sunglasses, subject to terms.
3. Save a third on train fares with a Senior Railcard
If you’re 60 or over and regularly travel by train, the National Rail Senior Railcard can help cut the cost of your journeys.
It costs £35 for one year or £80 for three years and gives you 1/3 off most rail fares, subject to the Railcard’s terms and travel restrictions. Your Railcard also gives you access to additional offers and discounts on things such as days out, food and entertainment.

4. Save 1/3 on National Express coach travel
The National Express Senior Coachcard is available to anyone aged 60 or over.
For £30 plus postage, it gives you 1/3 off Standard and Fully Flexible fares for a year, including peak-time travel.
There are additional offers too, including selected £15 day returns on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, when booked at least three days in advance.
It’s worth checking the terms and your journey before booking, as some services and dates are excluded.
5. Enjoy discounted cinema trips at Picturehouse
Picturehouse has a free Silver Screen club for over-60s. Members can enjoy discounted tickets and free tea or filter coffee at Silver Screen showings.
Screenings and prices vary between cinemas, so check your local Picturehouse before heading out.
6. Get £4.99 cinema tickets at Showcase
Showcase Cinemas runs Silver Screenings for people aged 60 and over every Thursday.
Tickets for films starting at or before 4pm are £4.99 in participating cinemas, although the price is higher at Showcase Cinema de Lux Bluewater. There are also special hot drink and snack offers at selected cinemas.
7. Get 20% off glasses at Specsavers
If you’re over 60, Specsavers currently offers 20% off a single pair of complete glasses from its £70 range or above. The offer includes frames, lenses and selected lens extras, subject to the terms and exclusions
8. Get free NHS prescriptions if you’re 60 or over in England
If you’re aged 60 or over and live in England, you can get free NHS prescriptions.
This benefit is based on age, so you don’t need to be receiving a particular benefit to qualify. Prescription charges don’t apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland under their respective NHS arrangements.
9. Get a free NHS eye test
People aged 60 and over are eligible for a free NHS sight test.
An eye test can be useful for checking your prescription as well as identifying potential eye health problems. The NHS generally recommends having your eyes tested every two years, or more often if advised by your optometrist.
10. Travel free by bus
Older people’s bus passes can provide free bus travel, although the qualifying age varies across the UK.
In England, you can normally apply when you reach State Pension age. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, free older people’s bus travel is available from age 60, subject to the relevant scheme and eligibility requirements.
If you live in London, you can apply for a 60+ London Oyster photocard, which provides free travel on eligible Transport for London services within London. Check the rules for your part of the UK before applying.
11. Join English Heritage at a senior rate
If you’re aged 65 or over, English Heritage offers a dedicated Senior membership.
Current membership is £72 for one year, compared with £84 for an individual adult membership. Membership gives you unlimited access to more than 400 historic sites, plus benefits including free entry for accompanying children under the scheme’s terms.
There are also joint senior membership options for two people aged 65 or over.
12. Take advantage of the RHS Senior Life Membership
If you’re aged 60 or over and love gardening, the RHS has membership options specifically for senior members.
Current pricing is £935 for individual senior life membership, compared with £1,495 for standard individual life membership, although other membership options are available.
Membership can give you benefits including entry to the RHS’s five gardens, access to more than 240 RHS Partner Gardens at selected times, gardening advice, the RHS magazine and discounted or privileged access to selected RHS shows.
It’s a particularly interesting option if you enjoy gardens and days out. Membership prices are subject to change so check the RHS website for the latest options and current prices.
13. Get a National Trust senior membership concession
The National Trust offers a 25% senior membership concession to existing members aged 60 or over who have been members for at least three consecutive years.
The concession currently reduces individual senior membership to £75.60, with joint senior membership costing £126. Importantly, this isn’t an introductory discount for new members – you need to meet the National Trust’s existing-member requirements.
14. Get a free TV licence if you’re 75 and receive Pension Credit
Being over 60 doesn’t automatically mean you get a free TV licence. However, if you’re 75 or over and you or your partner living at the same address receives Pension Credit, you can qualify for a free TV Licence.
You can apply from the age of 74, with the licence arranged to start when you turn 75.
People living in certain residential care, supported or sheltered accommodation may also qualify for a reduced-fee licence.
15. Look for Railcard extras and partner discounts
A Senior Railcard isn’t just about cheaper train tickets. Railcard holders can also access a changing selection of exclusive offers and discounts, covering areas such as restaurants, days out, entertainment, holidays and subscriptions.
Current offers can include deals such as free trials, discounted experiences and money off attractions, so it’s worth checking the Railcard offers page before planning your next trip.
Don’t forget to check for local senior discounts
National schemes aren’t the only way to save. Local museums, attractions, theatres, swimming pools, leisure centres, cafés and restaurants may offer their own senior concessions. These can vary considerably from one area to another and may not always be advertised online.
It’s worth asking when booking or paying: “Do you offer a senior discount?”
You may be surprised by what’s available.
